Green Roof Chicken Coop is one of those unique designs. The concept is appealing and people seem to gravitate towards the idea of a green roof on a chicken coop. We think it is because raising chickens is part of the green movement. People want to know where their food is being produced. So, with a green roof, people can get fresh herbs or vegetables with their fresh organic eggs! So, it is a perfect fit. Of course, perfection is never cheap! Building your own green roof chicken coop will save you a lot of money but it is more expensive to build a green roof chicken coop than a regular chicken coop. The green roof requires more support which requires more wood. It also requires plastic or preferably pond liner to protect the wood from water damage over the long term. Like they say, anything worth having takes some work. The bottom line is that if you want a green roof chicken coop, purchasing the plans will save you time with the building process and building it yourself will save you money. Of course, you also have the option of buying a fully assembled chicken coop or a kit which is pre-cut. Well, DIY Chicken Tractors has one of the most unique designs we have seen. The design is extremely different from most chicken coop designs and it might be the only chicken coop design we have seen that does use chicken wire (or where chicken wire is not readily apparent). For the chicken run, this chicken tractor takes advantage of 1x2’s. That being said, we still think it is wise to use chicken wire on the inside of the run. Wood is flexible. We think adding chicken wire will make the run more rigid and help add security to the chicken tractor. Furthermore, chicken wire can be added to the inside of the run area without impacting the aesthetic at all. We estimate that this chicken tractor can keep 4-6 chickens. We believe the wood costs approximately $150. Ironically, adding the 12 wheels and long carriage bolts almost doubles the cost of this chicken tractor as we estimate the cost of the wheels and bolts to be around $140. It is important to note that the wheels do not turn on this chicken coop which makes this good for a linear run like along a fence line or along the side of the house. Certainly it can be moved multi-directionally. It would just have to be lifted. We suspect the run end is quite a bit lighter than the end with the hen house and chicken coop. This chicken tractor is about 12’ long, 4’ high and 4’ wide. That is an overview of the specifications. Check out the pictures below.
